Height/Weight Charts
The body mass index (BMI) is a calculated number, used to compare and analyse the health effects of body weight on human bodies of all heights. It was developed by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet in the course of working out his system of "social physics", between 1830 and 1850 (and is therefore also known as the Quetelet Index). It is equal to the weight, divided by the square of the height.
The use of the BMI has the advantage of allowing the assessment of changes over time within a community. This simple indicator can be used to evaluate the impact of intervention strategies and economic development on nutrition status. |
Health Calculator
Basal metabolic rate (BMR), is the rate of metabolism when an individual is at rest in a warm environment and is in the post absorptive state, and has not eaten for at least 12 hours. The release of energy in this state is only sufficient for the vital organs such as the heart, lungs, nervous system, and kidneys. BMR decreases with age and with the loss of lean body mass. Regular cardiovascular exercise can increase BMR. Other factors can also affect BMR, such as illness, environmental temperature, and stress levels.
